Post-Weekend Positivity

I have learned that when I accidentally delete the "Weekend Blog" entry from my task list, I forget to do it. The extreme busyness may have had something to do with it, too.

I am proud of:
  • keeping up with the dishes again.
  • getting my finals graded by Sunday afternoon, when grades weren't due until Tuesday night.
  • getting all my grades wrapped up Monday, a day early.
  • enjoying a somewhat awkward (well, everything is awkward for me) social situation.
  • putting off Skyrim until everything necessary was done.

I enjoyed:
  • getting thank-yous from students. :)
  • playing silly games.
  • xmas shopping for little things from Lush (eagerly awaiting their delivery now!).
  • sleeeeeeeeeep.
  • baking a cheesecake with a santa hat on it:

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • sharing things I bake with people.
  • hugs.
  • my cat.
  • vacation!
Take care, all, and have a great holiday time (or mundane-but-awesome week if you don't celebrate anything nowish)! :)

Post-Weekend Positivity

I am a day late. This past week has been ramping up pretty dramatically into finals week. This coming week (up through next Tuesday) will be ridiculously busy with grading, and then I will get some time off.

I am proud of:

  • finishing the online course (with 100%)!
  • keeping my room pretty clean.
  • keeping up with the dishes.
  • expressing myself during a fight and ending it productively.
  • planning out my class time effectively to cover remaining material (done now).

I enjoyed:
  • playing Skyrim.
  • seeing students' finished projects, many of which are quite cool.
  • sleeping quite a lot (I have been ill, so it was good for me).
  • talking to friends.
  • being silly at home.

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • brownies.
  • my cat.
  • bed.
  • Elder Scrolls III-V.
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

This week was pretty normal. Not much to say about it, really. I am still not sure if blogging positives has ultimately helped me, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

I am proud of:

  • doing all the online course stuff super early this week.
  • cleaning my room today before playing a game.
  • keeping up with the dishes.
  • maintaining my distance from the aforementioned negative influence.
  • asking for things I wanted (and getting them, huzzah).

I enjoyed:
  • covering some fun material in class.
  • playing a silly game and a not-so-silly game.
  • having a fairly clean apartment.
  • playing with my cat.
  • sharing ridiculous in-jokes.

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • brownies.
  • my cat.
  • comfy soft surfaces.
  • hugs.
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

Absurdly busy in a different way this time...I only worked one day this week but there was a ton of stuff to do anyway, between grading, cleaning, and Thanksgiving. I am a day late, but I'm going to use Monday-Sunday as usual and save today's stuff for next weekend's post if I need it.

I am proud of:

  • getting the remaining exams from the previous week graded early.
  • keeping up with the online course again, doing the majority of the work early.
  • giving the whole apartment a proper cleaning.
  • refraining from playing Skyrim until I had proper time for it.
  • clearing up a frustrating misunderstanding without getting too panicky over it (I borrowed my boyfriend's rational thinking a little bit to do so).

I enjoyed:
  • getting $14 cute low-heeled pumps that fit (I have been looking for something like this for a year or more, so yay).
  • putting 7 hours into Skyrim when I finally had a day to myself.
  • time with family people.
  • time off and time to myself.
  • waking up without alarms for several days in a row.

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • Skyrimmmmmm.
  • my wonderful kitty.
  • Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry (for $2.50/12-pack :D)
  • sleep.
Take care, all. :)

This week has been absurdly busy, but I am still managing to post this.

I am proud of:
  • getting yet more homework grading done on time, when I had an excuse I could have used to avoid it.
  • copying all four exams this week a day ahead of time.
  • getting exams graded on time or early...two more to go, I hope to finish tomorrow (which would be very early).
  • keeping up with the online class despite the hectic week of four exams.
  • staying away from the negative influence again, despite being very tempted not to.

I enjoyed:
  • socializing.
  • teaching cool topics.
  • dinners out.
  • winning a difficult game of Words with Friends.
  • watching The Sing Off and being silly.

I love:
  • my cat.
  • Fresca.
  • Elder Scrolls games, although I am waiting to really play this one.
  • the prospect of time off this week!
  • my boyfriend.
Take care, all. :)

  • keeping up with the class I'm taking (full credit so far).
  • writing an exam early.

Weekend Positivity

Hey, look, second week in a row! It is bedtime, but I'm getting this done first.

I am proud of:

  • sticking with the mix-my-meals-up idea (this time it was just a different side item, but it's still different).
  • continuing to keep my room relatively clean.
  • keeping up with the dishes fairly well again (I've been making it a point to do them weekly at least).
  • making a decision to spend some time away from unhealthy influences.
  • inquiring about a class I wanted to take and when offered the opportunity to take it immediately, accepting!

I enjoyed:
  • hugs.
  • getting slung over a shoulder for what I think was the first time ever (in my adult life).
  • Halloween, although we only got two trick-or-treaters, and they came together...
  • playing with my cat.
  • reading/finishing another book! Night Watch is up next. I hear it is quite good.

I love:
  • life.
  • my boyfriend.
  • my cat.
  • bed.
  • my glasses, oddly enough. I was scared to get any at first but after 6 months I can honestly say I have grown to love them.
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

It's been two weeks, dammit...I should get a little better at this reliability thing. Ah well, that will not stop me from doing it now! Also, I saw this lyric this week and loved it: "even if your grades are bad, it doesn't mean you're failing." (from a new Amanda Palmer song detailed in this post) Trying to post weekly falls into this idea, too. I will keep trying, even though I do not appear to be very good at it, and it doesn't mean I fail! :p

I am proud of:
  • trying another new restaurant thing, huzzah (Olive Garden's stuffed rigatoni with chicken...yum)...also trying a new place altogether, Jimmy John's.
  • keeping up with the dishes.
  • keeping my room pretty clean.
  • assembling a bookshelf I've had hanging around for a while.
  • giving my opinion on an issue where others disagreed.

I enjoyed:
  • not having to curve any exams I wrote recently (yay me for writing good exams, yay students for doing well on them).
  • yummy dinners out.
  • dinner from a wok!
  • cooking with fresh garlic for the first (and later second) time.
  • tickling and other silliness.

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • my cat.
  • the character Sam Vimes from Discworld.
  • Amanda Palmer.
  • elf ears.
Take care, all. :)

Challenge!

Now presenting a new feature...Challenges for People Who Think These Things Are Challenging. Whether or not that's honestly catchy, here we go.

I am formally challenging myself (and anyone else who may care to join in) to do the following:

Each time you order a meal from a restaurant, try something you have not ordered recently.

I find this hard, because I often find one thing I like and I end up in a rut, ordering it every time, because...I know it will be fine, I know it won't be too spicy, I can withstand judgment about it because I have had it before and I am confident in my (repeated) decision, I know I won't have to order something else instead or eat something more later because it's too awful to eat, etc.

So I have been making an effort to try new things. I decided to formalize it here so I don't start slacking off, but I have been doing pretty well! I have tried:
  • Panera Bread's Turkey Artichoke Panini. Good, although not as pretty as the picture. I would(will!) definitely order this again.
  • Taco Bell's Original Chicken Flatbread Sandwich. Iffy, way less appetizing than the picture, and too spicy for me. Not again, but at least I tried!
  • Buffalo Wild Wings' Southwest Chicken Queso Wrap. Tasty, looked good, but too spicy for me. I would consider ordering this again, if I'm feeling particularly brave about spices. I think I enjoyed the experience of trying it more than eating my usual order there, which is cool.
Now for the technicalities...I am not requiring the entire meal to be new to me, but at least one part must be (the Panera sandwich mentioned above was had with a soup I often eat). I won't be applying this philosophy to pizza, because I have tried other things on pizzas and there aren't a lot of options. I also won't apply this to "I want a chocolate shake!" late-night fast food runs, because getting something other than a chocolate shake defeats the whole idea there. Otherwise, it's on. :P

Weekend Positivity

I'm going to stop making sweeping declarations of "never again will I miss a week!" because that only sets me up for guilt and disappointment. Instead I will try to make posts, and be happy about it when I do, and okay about it when I don't (but I will try to pick it up the next week when I miss one!)

It's been about four weeks, so as usual I'm turning on easy mode and letting myself use that whole span of time for material.

I am proud of:
  • picking up an opportunity for extra money.
  • putting sincere effort into a job application, and getting it in a week before the deadline!
  • cleaning my room.
  • keeping up with the dishes for a while (not including right now, but I'm going to fix that soon!) Edited to add: caught up again!
  • starting and using a task list (in my smartphone, woo).

I enjoyed:
  • more Discworld!
  • being allowed to take pictures from a new spot.
  • going interesting places with cool people.
  • making brownies for the first time in a while.
  • the return of silly fall tv series (including the sing-off!)

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • my kitty.
  • teaching.
  • chocolate.
  • reading.
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

Okay, the past month has been pretty insane. Work started back up again, and I went out of town for three weekends in a row (hence the lapse)...but I was here this past weekend so I'm calling this a late one from then, and I will do another come this weekend.

This basically covers a whole month...I think that will make it harder to do, but here goes!

I am proud of:
  • going out of my comfort zone to try new things.
  • spending a lot of time away from home and not getting too freaked out about it.
  • taking another difficult assignment.
  • restarting the diet and having a good first week thus far.
  • opening a savings account.

I enjoyed:
  • birthday Panera and cheesecake.
  • time spent with an adorable 3 year old.
  • weekend "camping" trips.
  • playing with my camera.
  • reading plenty of Pratchett.

I love:
  • books.
  • my boyfriend.
  • getting mail.
  • my cat.
  • teaching.
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

There was a week hiatus. Honestly, I totally forgot while I was on a trip to see my family. I'm back now, and posting really late at night/early in the morning because my sleep schedule is a little messy. Thus, this will stand for two weeks instead of one this time.

I am proud of:
  • going on a couple of bike rides (for the first time in years).
  • getting my grading done super fast.
  • seeing everyone I wanted to see while I was visiting family.
  • keeping my sanity during 8 days away from home, sleeping on couches.
  • doing a decent amount of dishes.

I enjoyed:
  • seeing several friends I hadn't seen in a while.
  • ice cream (I think I went to dairy queen 3 times during my trip...) and hanging out at target (4 times).
  • nice emails from students.
  • meeting a friend's new baby.
  • coming home again.

I love:
  • scrabble.
  • friends.
  • my boyfriend.
  • my cat.
  • personal space and a real bed.
Take care, all. :)

  • sweet potato fries (without marshmallow dip!).
Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

I have missed a couple of weeks. I was considering dropping the idea altogether, but I reminded myself that being positive is supposed to help with my biggest mental health hangup, self-esteem. Thus, I shall resume (and keep going with as few gaps as possible, I hope!)

I am proud of:
  • keeping my goal weight.
  • coming back and posting here.
  • asking for something I wanted and getting it.

Weekend Positivity

This has been a great day, and the week overall has gone pretty well, despite some setbacks. Up way too late, so I'm just going to fire off the positives post and head to bed!

I am proud of:
  • pretty much reaching my weight loss goal.
  • exercising twice this week, on Friday and Saturday (making it exceedingly hard on myself), but I still did it!

  • cleaning my room, the bathrooms, and the kitchen to some extent.

Take care, all. :)

Weekend Positivity

I almost forgot! but again, as long as it's posted before I go to bed Sunday, it's a success dammit.

I am proud of:
  • losing a few legitimate pounds, well on my way to my goal.
  • exercising once this week. It's okay that it was only once, because it was a damn busy week.
  • making copies the night before I needed to, so the next day was less rushed.
  • getting all my grades done tonight (two days before the deadline)!
  • opting out of a trip so I could stay home and get work done.

I enjoyed:
  • sleeping until I was done today. 13 hours, woo.
  • simultaneous "love you"s.
  • getting really kind comments from students.
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on the big tv.
  • getting late night shakes because I wanted chocolate.

I love:
  • chocolate.
  • good people.
  • my kitty.
  • a little alone time once in a while.
  • my boyfriend.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Sunday, May 1, 2011

Had some difficulty getting this up tonight, but if it's up before I go to bed on Sunday, I count it a success!

I am proud of:
  • keeping the diet going. It hasn't been perfect, but I haven't given up!
  • exercising twice this week. This was my third good week in a row, which is unprecedented.
  • cleaning my room (to some extent), vacuuming, and doing my laundry.
  • getting some intense review sheets done.

  • riding around a racetrack in my boyfriend's SUV.
  • watching the 8in8 project unfold.

I love:

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Weekend Positivity

Happy easter and/or random weekend! I am not much for celebrating easter (or capitalizing it) but I enjoy the chocolate my mom sends me. I am currently rationing out a dove bunny...mm.

I am proud of:
  • grading something that really needed grading.
  • exercising twice again this week, although I had to do it alone.
  • continuing the diet. I think this is the longest I have ever managed to count calories without entirely saying "screw it."
  • updating my resume attached to a job application (which involved asking the HR person to switch it for me, and she did).
  • getting a bunch of 5/5 ratings for my tutoring.

I enjoyed:
  • playing with the cat.
  • sleeping.
  • getting chocolate in the mail.
  • getting excited about my students' projects (in which they applied math to something that interested them).
  • talking/hanging out with friends, online and otherwise.

I love:
  • sleep.
  • cuddling.
  • cats.
  • my boyfriend.
  • word games.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Weekend Positivity

It's gloomy and cold out, but I can still be positive!

I am proud of:
  • having a full conversation about something that was bothering me a lot.
  • exercising twice this week (two times per week is my goal for now).
  • using a food diary and making a good attempt at reduced caloric intake most days this week (I've decided I'm not trying for 7 days a week, as 5-6 days will probably be easier while still being effective).
  • sweeping up the massive piles of litter in the cat's bathroom.
  • tutoring when I really didn't want to.

I enjoyed:
  • exercising with my (supportive!) boyfriend.
  • laughing at bad TV.
  • seeing Amanda Palmer and Ben Folds on http://live4sendai.tv/.
  • teaching i! (I hardly ever get to teach i.)
  • dinner out tonight.

I love:
  • math.
  • physics.
  • my kitty.
  • my boyfriend.
  • online shopping.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Weekend Positivity

Resuming my positivity this lovely Sunday, this time I am allowing myself to draw from the last two weeks instead of one, since I missed last time.

I am proud of:
  • putting time into creating a suitable exam review sheet, rather than just picking problems.
  • spending a lot of time writing a great exam that went over well (perhaps partly because of the thorough review sheet).
  • exercising once. I hope to pick the habit back up again long-term, as well.
  • keeping away from my favorite unhealthy coping mechanism, although I really wanted it.
  • making an appointment and getting my hair cut. I hate the phone and I'm always awkward with stylists, but I really needed it.

I enjoyed:
  • making fun of crappy TV shows with my boyfriend.
  • family gatherings.
  • time with a 3 year old who is apparently my biggest fan.
  • baking and sharing the baked goods with people.
  • finding the averages for a couple of my exams were in the 80s.

I love:
  • my boyfriend.
  • brownies.
  • diet dr. pepper cherry.
  • my kitty.
  • playing with language, and knowing people who love doing the same.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Oops...and some musing.

I missed a weekend. In my defense, it was a very busy one. I spent Friday getting upset over something very, very silly, and then I was out of the house most of Saturday. Sunday was devoted to putting several hours of effort into writing an exam, and I'm very glad I did because it turned out really well. All of that means I didn't get to the positives thing this time.

Often when I miss something once, I will take that as an excuse to stop doing it altogether. "I've already blown the streak, may as well not bother now" or somesuch. However, I am going to post this weekend (perhaps tomorrow). I mean that!

I've also been meaning to post about why I am posting positives. Since it is not yet time for another weekend post, I think I'll do that now.

So. Why list positive things I did/positive things that happened/things I love? I am honestly not sure.

I do not like to call myself a depressed person, but I have been diagnosed as such, and I certainly have a predisposition to cope poorly. I also struggle with self-esteem. I have a lot of negative thoughts that float around in my head, even though I do not rationally believe them; things like "I hate myself," "I hate my life," etc. come to mind regularly just as habit, I think.

I started this blog because a friend does something similar, and it sounded like a good thing to do. I did not have a specific plan or idea of what I would be improving with it. In theory, a list of accomplishments is a good place to start with challenging thoughts like "I hate myself," and lists of things I enjoy doing and things I love are good for challenging the more general ingrained "I hate my life" thoughts.

It's difficult for me to challenge all of my self-esteem issues with a list of accomplishments, though. It sounds sort of shallow, but I've never been able to accept the way I look. Worrying about it is probably the #1 reason I find myself crying. I honestly don't know what I can do to work on this aspect, but I know I can accept that I am a decent person who does good things and still be upset that I am not attractive.

Maybe the ultimately healthy version of myself would remove attractiveness from my sense of self-worth entirely, and maybe I am working toward that by focusing on positive accomplishments. I guess I'll see.

End-Of-Weekend Positivity

Oops, pushing it further and further into the weekend. But it's still the weekend a little longer!

I am proud of:
  • cleaning the bathroom counter and mirror.
  • making an effort to be more affirmative/assertive when I want something (this is really difficult for me!).
  • finishing something that was better done ASAP, but had a fuzzy deadline I could have put off.
  • catching up on dishes.
  • coming up with a solution in a difficult situation that I feel was more than fair to an individual but not unfair to the rest of the group involved.

I enjoyed:
  • more playing with my shiny new phone...a lot more.
  • specifically on the phone, playing Words with Friends with a couple of people.
  • going to bed early enough to get a good amount of sleep every night!
  • not being ill.
  • chatting with friends online.

I love:
  • snow, even if it is supposed to be spring.
  • getting positive feedback on my tutoring/teaching.
  • having a clean kitchen and bathroom.
  • my cat.
  • my boyfriend.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Weekend Positivity

Well, I'd been doing Fridays, but note how I cleverly switched to "weekend" last time so I had a little more freedom on when to do this. Thus, I didn't forget, I just waited a day. Whether that was convincing enough or not, I'm going to do it now.

I am proud of:
  • making myself rest and finally get over my illness with fever/sore throat/etc., which I had for 5ish days.
  • tutoring (online, so contagiousness was not a problem) despite the illness!
  • extending a couple of my deadlines due to illness, and notifying the affected people *before* the original deadline had passed.
  • cleaning the kitchen.
  • meeting one of my extended deadlines (I intend to meet the other one today).

I enjoyed:
  • dinner out at an awesome restaurant.
  • getting a shiny new phone and playing with it.
  • LOTRO.
  • going without an alarm all week (yay, spring break).
  • being able to wear shorts and skirts in nice weather.

I love:
  • having a clean kitchen.
  • nice spring weather.
  • my kitty, even when she loudly announces that she has brought me a toy mouse at 2:30am, when I have been asleep for an hour.
  • my boyfriend.
  • unrestricted sleep.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Weekend Positivity

Ditching the alliterative title, and going with this until I get some spark of inspiration from the great beyond, or something. I still plan a post on why I am doing these, eventually, but for now I am just going to make sure I keep doing them.

This week...

I am proud of:
  • keeping up with my deadlines for the important things (including the other sub-goal I mentioned last week!).
  • passing my probationary period/getting promoted.
  • coming to a reasonable financial agreement in a situation that had been bothering me.
  • finally finishing a task I'd been avoiding since January.
  • putting my physical manifestation of emotional baggage on ebay, even if it hasn't sold.

I enjoyed:
  • LOTRO.
  • cuddles.
  • getting great feedback on a job well done.
  • talking to awesome friends.
  • having a happy boyfriend.

I love:
  • being (nearly) caught up with dishes.
  • bonus pay!
  • helping people understand math.
  • academic breaks.
  • my boyfriend.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Positives Post

I have no idea how to format this thing, and I don't have a catchy alliterative title for it. (Edit: Hey, "Positives Post" is alliterative! I'll go with that for now.) However, I think the important part is just doing it, for now. I don't promise consistency in future formats, or catchy titles ever.

I think I'll go with things I'm proud of (i.e. things I did that were good, perhaps things that were hard for whatever reason), things I enjoyed (i.e. things that happened to me that I liked, doesn't matter if I caused them), and things I love (this one won't be events, just people/places/objects, I think). I will try for 5 of each, and while I'm sure there will be some repetition, I will try to mix it up.

This week...

I am proud of:
  • breaking down an overwhelming, much-belated task into doable sub-goals, and finishing the first one on time! (The next sub-goal hasn't expired yet.)
  • saying what's in my head when I have been upset. I was upset a lot this week, but that just means I got more practice saying what was wrong and feeling better because of it.
  • showing up and doing the rest of something when I realized I was 30 minutes late for it, instead of canceling the whole thing.
  • getting a very important thing done a full day ahead of time.
  • asking for respect in a situation where I wasn't getting any.

I enjoyed:
  • funny tv shows (particularly How TV Ruined Your Life, episode 3).
  • making (and eating) brownies!
  • time with friends, in person and online.
  • playing with the cat.
  • waking up without an alarm and getting stuff done today.

I love:
  • freshly vacuumed floors.
  • my kitty.
  • my boyfriend.
  • math.
  • brownies.

Take care, anyone who happens to be reading. :)

Testing?

Well then, this is me being positive.

At the moment, I think it's excellent that I have created this and written a couple of sentences.
